I really enjoyed being at the Base Plant site and getting to go out into the field to see the projects that I was working on. The project management work I was doing helped me to strengthen my communication, organization, and excel skills, and I got to do some managing of a project myself. I was able to get some exposure to other areas/departments of Suncor, which was really great as I got some more technical experience. There were lots of opportunities to volunteer and engage with the communities in the area as well, which was something I was quite impressed with.
My leaders were very receptive to my questions and easy to talk to. I got some great feedback and was encouraged to step outside my comfort zone in doing work that I haven't done before.
Everyone was nice and easy to talk to. Not as much social happening outside of work since it was on site and not near any restaurants or anything like that, but I did go out to wing night with people from work a few times.
I applied to the summer Aboriginal Student Program so the job listing was open to all backgrounds.
Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions and get some exposure to other areas/departments.
